About bill dickens

Bill Dickens has already enjoyed a legendary career. The list of credits do not fit on one page; he has been a highly prized bass player in the studio and on stage for many years. Janet Jackson, The Meters, Ramsey Lewis, and many more have tapped his extraordinary bass style for their albums. Bill has appeared live with Chaka Kahn, Bernie Worrell, Grover Washington, Johnny Mathis, Al Dimeola, Pat Metheny, and dozens more. He has been a producer and writer on projects with Aretha Franklin, Bootsy Collins, Terry Hunter, Brian Culbertson, Fareed Haque, Jerry Harrison, and more. Bill ‘The Buddha’ Dickens has done it all.

Well, not everything. Tha Truth, Bill Dickens’ debut solo recording, is set for release on Ropeadope on October 21, 2014. In today’s world of home studios and DIY bands, Bill Dickens has written and recorded an album that not only shows his experience (and chops) as one of the best bass players in the world, but has the optimism and edge of a debut recording. Tha Truth has the diversity that one would expect as it moves through jazz and funk, with a surprise track from Mike Gordon and covers of both ‘Time After Time’ and ‘What’s Goin On’. In the end, it is a concise story of the world of Bill Dickens, delivered with the precision that one would expect from a seasoned producer.

Tha Truth is a monster of a record. It’s a story of the artist’s life in multiple parts. Badass bass lines and sensuous horns fill in part of the story; silky vocals pay tribute to the heroes; the cleanest dirty funk ever made is mixed throughout. Tha Truth is a hip walk through the city streets with the coolest cats by your side. That Truth is the full story of the evolution of a seasoned and storied life - the life of Bill Dickens.
