When I think about my favorite bands of 2009, Freelance Whales are definitely first to come to mind. With their lovely concoctions of textured guitars, banjos, synthesizers, percussion, and a myriad of other intruments and sounds, I'm convinced that they can bring a smile to anyone's face. This Queens- based band is quirky, fun, and lyrically heartwarming. I recently had the pleasure of shooting pictures of them when they were opening for Fanfarlo at Johnny Brenda's and it was unbelievable. Their debut album Weathervanes is amazing and seeing them live is a step above. If you are in the Philly area January 22, be sure to check them out at Kung Fu Necktie.
