Veggie Burritos Podcast #9-"Sidewalk Killer”

by Snackfight the Selector
added on 12.03.2009
There's a great scene in the classic Jamaican film Rockers when all of the main characters are gearing up to pull off the big heist in the climax, and there's shot after shot of the guys strutting down the sidewalks and back alleys of Kingston. It's set to the Peter Tosh song "Steppin' Razor." They all have distinctive walks -- they bob and pop while they step, coming across like a gang of joyful peacocks. Except Jacob Miller, who looks sleepy in his fatigues with one leg rolled up, and Gregory Isaacs, who is dead serious with his briefcase full of lock-picking tools.

This mix is a set of music for strutting. It's all roots and dub reggae in the Rockers style, lots of horns and "flying cymbal" splashes. Somewhere in there is a song by I-Roy called "Sidewalk
Killer" that gives the set its name (A "sidewalk killer" is what you call a guy with a particularly badass walk). It has nothing to do with the display of a sidewalk killer, but it's a DJ cut of Tommy McCook's
"Sidewalk Doctor" -- itself an instrumental take of Marlena Shaw's "Woman of the Ghetto". Such a great groove, I had to name the set after it. Enjoy!

DJ Chicken George Mix #4

by DJ Chicken George
DJ Chicken George told us that it is "unreal" the volume of emails he receives requesting a new Ropeadope mix, therefore he felt inclined to "give the people what they want" ! Between releasing his compilations worldwide (SWED.U.S.H Connection series) & deejaying exclusive dates all over the world, CG somehow managed to follow suit with this impeccable, long awaited Ropeadope Podcast for his favorite mix series. His signature "Jazztronica" flavor shines brightly throughout this mix fusing Soul, dub, Hip-hop, latin, rare grooves & of course heavy on the "Jazztronica." Within minutes of very pleasurable listening, you'll see why CG's skills have garnered him attention on an international scale and why he stays in high demand.

frow show, episode 48: hello, goodbye!

Episode 48: Hello, Goodbye!

Hey everybody!

Sorry the Frow Show has been absent for the bulk of the summer, but it's all groovy, since we were just waiting to be able announce the happiest of happiests in radioland: the Frow Show is moving to WFMU! (Let me just add one more exclamation mark: !)

It's gonna be fairly irregular for starters, probably fill-ins at odd hours. But that's totally rad, too, 'cause FMU are real good about getting their shows to people who don't occupy the same physical or linear space as their studio in Jersey City. All future Frow Shows will thus be available at: http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/jj (and, once I get comfortable, I'll hopefully get podcasts going as an option again, too)

I begin with an episode this Saturday, 8/23, as part of The Listener Hour, from 9 am - 10 am.

Future Frow Show announcements will be made at jessejarnow.com, and via a handy Google mailing list you can join over there. Do sign up!

Thanks so, so much to Andy & Ropeadope for all the hospitality & encouragement over the past three years.
