Last Friday, a small club in the historic U St. Corridor of Washington DC, welcomed a young, bright new face in jazz, 24-year old, Grammy nominated trumpeter Christian Scott. Hailing from New Orleans' 9th Ward, by way of New York City, Christian and his twin brother Kiel, missioned it through 6 hours of traffic to support the brooding local DC jazz scene. John Lamkin, an old friend and long time drummer for Christian's uncle, Donald Harrison, had asked Christian to sit in, with a local all star lineup featuring DC's own Kris Funn (bass) and Allyn Johnson (keys).
The quintet played two riveting sets of unrehearsed tunes, with Christian calling out tempos and keys between songs. While the first set was grounded in straight ahead and bebop, the second set showcased Christian's true voice- a lyrical, mysterious and minimalist style of playing that reminsices of Miles' late blue period.
