The She & Him story begins when in 2006, renowned one man band M. Ward, recorded a duet with a girl named Zooey Deschanel. A delightful recording session, the experience lead to a dialogue between the two about collaborating further. This, in turn, led to Deschanel admitting to secretly making dozens and dozens of home demos and hoarding them like acorns for the winter. Sick and tired of being stingy and secretive about music, Deschanel realized that if songs were acorns then this was indeed her wintertime: she sent the recordings to Ward and these demos became the basis for their first record, entitled Volume One. clearly one of my favorite records of 2008.  

Been covering kicksville singles season one?.  Take a trip south bound and follow the main drum beat. yes it's loosely based on the beat from "Southbound Suarez" by Led Zeppelin and some of the vocal snippets are lines from Captain Beefheart's song "Sam Was a Basket Case". Any real record stores would have a real section called experimental indy-rock. that's where you'd dig into burlington vermont's japhy ryder who cooks up breathtaking planes of atmospheric space, onslaughts of powerhouse rock, and heavy driving rhythms, a tight, unified voice. With a hard hitting rhythm section, riff heavy guitar, and ethereal trumpet, the group is continually bridging genres (think dub/afrobeat/jazz/hip-hop/rock) and surprising audiences (think “OMG, they sparked my crotch!”). dig in here. listen and buy here.
