Red Hook Soul
We've been sitting on this for a minute, and now it's time to roll back the curtain on one of our absolute favorites for 2016. It was winter in NY when Tony Scherr told us about this recording over coffee in the village. Michael Blake has a storied career - The Lounge Lizards, Pinetop Perkins, Slow Poke, and much more - balancing the high-and-low brow worlds of jazz. Red Hook Soul is his ode to the gritty neighborhood dive bar, recorded flawlessly with the best of the best. A few originals with classic covers of Gladys Knight, Otis Redding, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Ray Charles and Lana del Rey. RED HOOK SOUL is ready for prime time on 10/16 - drop in here and check out the title track, and support high quality music with your preorder.
Mike Nagoda : outside The Box
Canadian double-slide playing, LGBT advocating, standing strong and making great music guy MIKE NAGODA is working on his next record for release right here at Ropeadope, and he needs your support to make it happen. If you are not familiar, Mike has adopted the double slide guitar as his cerebral palsy makes all other instruments impossible to handle. His first record was released here last year, and now he is teaming up with Grammy winning producer Chris Birkett to record OUTSIDE THE BOX. We've heard some of the rough mixes and it is incredibly exciting to hear Mike's development as an artist. Mike exemplifies the outsider who faces challenges and stands strong throughout to persevere - a true Ropeadope story. Please take a moment to read Mike's story right here, and support by contributing or sharing.

Amad (Slavic Soul Party)
Ibaraki - Corey King
Far East Suite
In 1963, the DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA embarked on a US State Dept 'jazz diplomacy' tour of the Middle East, South Asia, and The Balkans. Later, Ellington recorded his brilliant collaboration with Billy Strayhorn, The FAR EAST SUITE. And now, 50 years later, SLAVIC SOUL PARTY re-imagines the Far East Suite as an Eastern European brass band discovering an exotic American sound, reversing the "exotic tinge" and reveling in this subtle, funky, and brilliant music. Led by Matt Moran, SSP explores the tangled issues of authenticity and identity, while creating music that is uniquely New York. While celebrating Ellington, they are perhaps adding their chapter to the piece, as the tour never made it to the Balkans - it was cut short on November 22, 1963, the day after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Slavic Soul Party plays Duke Ellington's Far East Suite debuts on September 16, drop in here for preorder and to hear tracks as they are unveiled.
