a hard rain’s a gonna fall
We've been on the authentic-yet-different afrobeat tip since we dropped Antibalas' Who Is This America? back in 2004. The evolution of music is the driving force that keeps this whole thing spinning, and now Will Rast of Antibalas brings the next phase to reality with The Funk Ark. Serious players, serious business, serious groove. That's what this band is all about, so dig in right here and get busy.
Our new resident rockers, Kalen & The Sky Thieves, are hitting the road in support of their new record, Bluebird. Tour starts tomorrow right here in Philly Town and you know they are gonna throw down. Check the dates right here, get hip at this spot, and preorder the new album right over here. And watch the sky carefully.
All About Kalen & The Sky Thieves
Bluebird is the debut album from Brooklyn-based Kalen & the Sky Thieves. Produced and recorded by the band and John Davis at The Bunker Studio, Bluebird runs the gamut from modern alternative to old time rock and roll. The album serves to fulfill Kalen's dream of making a proper rock record, while providing a platform for her to exercise her considerable vocal talents. The band consists of Kalen's long-time Sky Thieves, Jay Giacomazzo (I, Revere) on bass, Will Hanza (Loop Grass) on guitar, and Wayan Zoey (Russ Kaplan +7), and the majority of the album was recorded live in the studio to enhance the raw power of people making music together with real instruments.
Tip Toe Waltz
We've had a busy year here at the fake offices, but this one has been in the works and it's time to reveal it to the world. Lars Bartkuhn is known worldwide, and he's releasing his masterwork (so far) next Tuesday. The title is Passion Dance Orchestra, and it's so sublime and beautiful that you might just miss the intense complexity of the project. The rehearsals alone are amazing, so please take the time to enjoy. Find Lars here, Like him over here, and dig the first two tracks and preorder right over here.

Artists Take Risks
Every time they get up in front of you. Every time they create and put their art out to the world. Todd Clouser is one of those artists who takes that risk as far as it will go. Traveling to places most of us would not go, meeting people in big cities and small villages, all with the message of music as a connecting force. Todd, we salute you; you are in the wilderness fighting the dragon so that we may all one day be free. We are honored to release your latest work - Son Of A Hero.
Walk the (side)walk
Take an MC (Rico Sisney) and a vocalist (Maggie Vagle) and put a slammin jazz/funk band with horns behind them. Hot, right? Sidewalk Chalk is that band, and they've shared the stage with ?uestlove, De La Soul, Action Bronson, Jean Grae, and Hiatus Kaiyote for good reason. The power of this band is on the road, coming to a town near you - and they're recording the whole thing to drop their Ropeadope debut on the world. Be in it, tour starts on October 3.
Tasty Treat for your weekend
On November 5, 2009 Sex Mob and Friends (DJ Logic, Eric Krasno, and more) set up at Sullivan Hall in New York to honor and help Scott Harding, AKA Scotty Hard. Scott's imprint is all over the early days of Ropeadope with DJ Logic's first two releases and more, and his friends came out to help him in a time of need. With Sex Mob making a rare appearance next Tuesday at Le Poisson Rouge we thought we'd bring this one out for your enjoyment. Interesting to note that Adam Rogers appears, as Adam is now a part of FORQ with Michael League and Henry Hey. The music lives on.
We are thrilled to announce that the one (the only) Bill 'The Buddha' Dickens has joined the Ropeadope family. He's played with Chaka Kahn, Bernie Worrell, Pat Metheny and many more. He's produced and written on projects from Aretha Franklin, Bootsy Collins, Jerry Harrison, and more. And now its time for Bill Dickens to hit the world stage as ... himself. His new record, Tha Truth, drops right here on October 21st, and it's everything you'd expect from a badass bass player and more. And as if that's not enough, Ropeadope alum Mike Gordon makes a special appearance. Get ready.
